The meeting of the Council of State is being presided over by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), and is taking place in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.
The conference, which is the first in 2023, takes place 14 days before the presidential elections and in the midst of the economy’s twin crises of a lack of petroleum and a currency shortage brought on by the Central Bank’s program to redesign the naira.
Along with former President Goodluck Jonathan, previous Heads of State General Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar are present.
Only roughly 14 governors are present at the hybrid conference both physically and digitally, some of them are represented by their deputies. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is participating virtually.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, as well as two former Chief Justices of Nigeria, are also in attendance.
The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, are also in attendance to update the council.
Additionally present are the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan. The Nigerian Federal Government’s Council of State is a body that provides advice to the executive on important policy decisions.
It comprises the President as chairman, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (deputy chairman), all living former Presidents and Heads of State, the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, all the 36 state governors and Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
