The 2023 national population and housing census for Nigeria will take place from March 29 to April 1 of that year. This was revealed to State House Correspondents on Friday by Nasir Kwarra, the chairman of the National Population Council and National Population Commission.
He spoke immediately after having a meeting at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja with President Muhammadu Buhari. “By March 29 to April 2, our staff will be in the field enumerating people,” said Kwarra.
He claims that the technical instruments that would be used will be able to code structures and landmasses, providing details on things like location, sceneries, etc. This will guarantee a legitimate workout, he claimed.
He said that non-Nigerians will be included in the calculations as long as they are present in Nigeria at the time of the exercise. The Federal Government has out N40bn for the National Population in the 2023 Appropriations Act.
The national population and housing census received a total of N10 million, while the national population data bank, Nigerian population database management system geo-portal, and population website and web portal each received N50 million.
The paper states that it will cost N60m to conduct a census in schools and educate advocacy personnel in data gathering and interviewing procedures.
Furthermore, N350 million was needed for the expansion of registration centers, birth and death registration, and ad hoc registration.
For census research, documentation, and preservation, N25 million was allotted (i.e., research on historical events, special population e.g. herdsmen, fishermen, homeless persons, migrant farmers.)
Publicity and advocacy for the census would cost N120 million. This includes publicity, information, communication, and DNA enlightenment for demographic programs.
It will cost N30 billion to complete other unfinished/unrelated tasks for the 2023 housing and population census.
