A fleet from the Chinese Navy Escort Task Group (ETG) 162, consisting of the MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU, arrived in Nigeria on Sunday to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Chi Jian Chun, stated that the visit, scheduled from July 2 to 6, aims to bolster maritime security in West Africa in addition to strengthening ties between the two nations.
The MSL Destroyer NANNING docked at Berth 21 of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), while the other two ships remained at anchor.
Ambassador Chun highlighted that the Chinese delegation, comprising over 700 individuals and three ships, signifies the deepening relationship and cooperation between Nigeria and China.
“This visit showcases the harmony and synergy between Nigeria and China,” he stated, emphasizing the commitment to collaboration and contributing to the international community.

“We will continue to strengthen cooperation in the military sector, working together to overcome challenges and promote the relationship between our two countries,” added Ambassador Chun.
Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, expressed that the visit would further solidify the relationship between the Nigerian Navy and the Chinese Navy, particularly in combating crime in the Gulf of Guinea.
During the stay, there will be interactions, sports activities, exchange of mementos and gifts, and discussions on future collaborations between the navies of both countries.
Akpan mentioned that the concept of “sea riders” would enable some Nigerian Navy personnel to board the Chinese ship, and vice versa, fostering friendship and understanding between the two forces.
The Chinese community in Lagos enthusiastically welcomed the Chinese envoy at the NPA, and their vibrant synchronized dance routines showcased the rich culture of China at the port.
