Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has offered his perspective on the incident involving the Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, being blocked from approaching him by Department of State Services (DSS) officials.
A photograph circulated over the weekend showing a DSS operative obstructing Shaibu from approaching Governor Obaseki. The incident occurred during a Sunday event at the New Festival Hall of the Government House in Benin, which marked the 32nd anniversary of Edo State’s creation from the former Bendel State.
In the photograph, Governor Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, were seated behind the DSS operative who prevented the Deputy Governor from making contact with the Governor.

In response to the incident, Obaseki’s Chief Press Secretary, Andrew Okungbowa, released a statement on Monday clarifying the situation. Obaseki stated that he had no prior knowledge of the incident and that the security personnel were simply executing their duties.
“The governor was not aware that the deputy was coming to greet him. The church is a public event, so the security aides had a duty to safeguard their principal,” the statement read.
Obaseki’s remarks suggest that the DSS officials were carrying out their roles and responsibilities in ensuring security during the public church service event. The incident has garnered attention due to its occurrence in a public setting and the subsequent circulation of the photograph.
