Warri, Nigeria – Chief Oma Eyewuoma, the Ologbotsere of Warri kingdom, emphasized that the Itsekiri community’s call for the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) is an unequivocal assertion of their legitimate rights.
Chief Eyewuoma, along with the Warri Council of Chiefs, made this declaration during their visit to the ongoing peaceful protest conducted by Itsekiri individuals at the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulation Commission, Warri (NNPC) Zonal office. The purpose of their visit was to express appreciation for the protesters’ dedication.
The Ologbotsere praised the Itsekiri sons and daughters for their unwavering commitment to a peaceful demonstration on the third day of their protest, aimed at urging the government to implement the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). In unison with other chiefs, he commended the protesters for enduring the elements, whether under the rain or the scorching sun.
The chiefs, in their collective voice, emphasized that the Itsekiri people have endured inequity for far too long. Consequently, they stressed the importance of providing unwavering support to His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III (CFR), for the development of Iwere land.
Chief Eyewuoma remarked, “This ongoing struggle is not just for us; it is for the benefit of future generations. We must persevere. We are merely demanding what is rightfully ours as Itsekiris, and this land, blessed with oil, should benefit everyone, not just a select few. The monarch has taken steps to ensure that the wealth given to us by God is shared equally. Numerous falsehoods and lies have been told, but this protest signifies that we say ‘enough is enough.'”
He added, “The world must take heed, listen, and empathize with our cause. When justice is served, it will benefit others, and Nigeria will progress and develop, with Itsekiri showing the way under the leadership of our monarch.”

Chief Francis Omatseye also praised the protesters for their dedication and support. He highlighted that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was relevant in the past, but the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) is now of paramount importance and aligns with the people’s needs.
Omatseye emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among the Itsekiri people, stating, “Itsekiris must move forward together in harmony, as there will be no internal strife. This is a peaceful protest.”
Regarding the role of the Olu (monarch), he explained that the monarch should not be confined to the palace. While some may hold differing views, the Olu, as the paramount leader, has every right to address matters affecting his kingdom and exercise his leadership role.
The chiefs also called upon Shell and Chevron Nigeria Limited to respect constituted authority, emphasizing that there is only one King in Warri, deserving of utmost respect if peace in the land is to be maintained.
Notable figures present at the gathering included Chief Brown Mene, Chief Solomon Areyenke, and Chief (Mrs.) Esther Okotie-Eboh.
