Aisha Falode, Chairperson of the Nigerian Women’s Football League, has clarified that FIFA will still channel the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup through the country’s football federation (NFF).
Following the Super Falcons’ qualification to the second round of the World Cup, FIFA Secretary-General Fatma Samoura reportedly stated that the world’s football governing body would directly send the unpaid allowances to the players of the Nigerian women’s football team.
According to FIFA’s announced structure, every player participating in the World Cup group stage will receive $30,000, while the match bonuses will increase to $60,000 in the second round of the competition. Hence, each Nigerian team player is expected to earn at least $60,000 for reaching the round of 16 in Australia and New Zealand.

During a conversation with Lagos Talks FM on Wednesday, Falode clarified that the World Cup prize money will be “ring-fenced,” ensuring that it reaches the players without any third-party interference. She reiterated that the Falcons’ prize money from the ongoing World Cup will still be routed through the NFF, as FIFA intends to pay the federations directly, and the federation will then distribute the funds to the players accordingly.
The Nigerian team is set to face England in a second-round contest on Monday, and the nation’s football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate their performance in the prestigious tournament.
