The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a 50% cut in rates for commuters who use Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Lagos ferry, and rail services across Lagos State.
On Wednesday, February 8, 2022, he made the news while speaking to media at the Lagos House in the state’s Marina region.
The Governor stated that all state public transit on the road and waterways system will be reduced in price beginning next week.
Sanwo-Olu stated that the BRT has been ordered to charge half the present charges in order to alleviate the suffering caused by the currency exchange on citizens.
“To further support Lagosians to weather these stormy days, I hereby announce the following measures: A 50% cut in fares on all our BRT buses, LAGRIDE taxi-scheme, First Mile and Last Mile buses, and Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY),” the governor said.
“This will take effect from tomorrow for the next seven days. We will push out more Cowrie Cards to enable more Lagosians to get onboard our services.”
The governor also declared that starting of Thursday, February 9, 2023, palliative products would be delivered to citizens through religious leaders and non-governmental organizations to assist individuals afflicted by the current circumstances.
While mandating the establishment of food banks in various sections of the state to serve the vulnerable, the governor also stated that the state government will give food to various communities.
The governor praised the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police, Civil Defence, and Neighbourhood Watch for their dedication and commitment to the state.
He urged Lagos people to do legitimate business without fear.
