The former governor of Ekiti State and a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ayodele Fayose, has dumped the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, insisting that power must return to the South in 2023.
Fayose in a Twitter post on Wednesday noted that since President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, will be completing eight years in 2023, it is only logical for power to return to the South.
Fayose wrote:
The current President of Nigeria is a 2-term Northern Presidency, thus implying that it MUST be a Southern Presidency in 2023 or NOTHING.
Awa ‘South’ lo kan’. Nigerians should await details soon.

The PDP Constitution provides for a rotational Presidency. Section 3(c) provides that the Party shall pursue its aims & objectives by "adhering to the policy of the rotation & zoning of Party & Public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness."

PDP’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku is a northerner from Adamawa State.
Fayose’s decision suggests he won’t be backing the former vice president and has prompted speculations that he may soon defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), whose presidential candidate is Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
There has been a cold war in the PDP since the emergence of Atiku as the candidate of the party, and his subsequent decision to snub Nyesom Wike, Rivers State governor while choosing his running mate.
Fayose had supported Wike during the PDP presidential primary.
Last week, he visited the Rivers governor with NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
