The Catholic Herald Weekly, the multimedia Lagos Archdiocesan newspaper will be recruiting qualified candidates to fill the following positions:
1. EDITOR
This candidate must be proficient at multi-tasking and meeting the daily demands of The Catholic Herald Weekly’s digital and print publication through the production of cutting-edge stories, reports, interviews, analysis, and features that suit the Catholic audience. The successful candidate is expected to generally lead the strategic operations for editorial content, circulation, and advertising of Archdiocesan print and digital publications.
Job Requirements
Skills and Competences:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills for print and digital platforms: Website, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- A practicing Catholic with sound knowledge and understanding of Church teachings, doctrines, and a general understanding of the Archdiocesan structure, its organizations, and operational procedures.
- Superior proofing skills with a demonstrated mastery of English grammar, punctuation, and style.
- Hands-on knowledge and understanding of the role of social communications to evangelize by inspiring, educating, and informing the Catholic faithful.
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to delegate and monitor tasks.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and cultivate relationships with stakeholders, including Priests, Religious, and Laity.
- Strong managerial skills.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook); photography and videography skills are added advantage.
- Good research skills.
- A creative mindset to create as well as identify interesting and in-depth stories for the Catholic audience.
Qualification and Experience:
- Minimum of a B.SC, HND or its equivalent in Mass Communication, Journalism, English Language, Christian Religious Studies, or other relevant fields. A Master’s Degree in Mass Communication will be an advantage.
- Minimum of seven years cognate experience with at least three years at a leadership position, preferably in a newspaper or magazine print media environment.
- Membership of relevant professional bodies is important.
2. REPORTER
The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of the Catholic Church, its teachings, structure, and doctrines; and be knowledgeable about the workings of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos. The candidate must have the competence to generate the news, features, interviews, and analysis content as well as post in multiple formats: print, websites, mobile platforms, and social networks.
Skills and Competence:
- Ability to write news and feature stories that appeal to the Catholic audience.
- Stay up to date on all news involving the Catholic Church (local – Parishes, Arch/dioceses, National; and International –Vatican) and national burning issues.
- Proficient in uploading stories to the website and posting them to the newspaper’s social media pages and working knowledge of SEO.
- Ability to multitask.
- Thrives in a deadline-driven environment.
- Social media best practices.
- Ability to take photos.
- An eye for details, design, and story layout.
Qualification and Experience:
- Minimum of an HND, or B.SC or B.A in Mass Communication, Journalism, English Language, Christian Religious Studies, or equivalent. A Master’s Degree in Mass Communication will be an advantage.
- Minimum of two years cognate experience preferably in a newspaper or magazine print media environment.
3. COPY SALES (CIRCULATION)OFFICER
The ideal candidate should be a passionate and aggressive Circulation Officer with a veritable record of achieving high circulation and subscription deals in newspaper sales.
This candidate should have a good knowledge of the Archdiocese of Lagos particularly its Parishes and institutions; devising means of selling The Catholic Herald Weekly outside Parishes and through subscriptions. The ideal candidate must be a male candidate with a good understanding of the Lagos metropolis and must be capable of developing circulation sales strategies to achieve short-, medium-, and long-term copy sales revenue and target.
Skills and Competences:
- Robust sales profile with efficiency in improving reach and paid circulation.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to think out of the box, inject fresh ideas to promote sales, and broaden visibility and circulation of the newspaper.
- Excellent customer service.
- Computer literate; proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Outgoing and smart with intelligence.
- Ability to write weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual sales circulation reports for up-to-date information on circulation sales performance.
- Amiable personality and ability to take initiative.
- Have driven and be resulted oriented.
- Large capacity for delivery on sales targets.
- Valid driver’s license.
Qualification and Experience:
- Minimum of B.SC/B. A./HND in Marketing, Mass Communication, or equivalent.
- Minimum of three years cognate experience in newspaper circulation
4. ADVERTISEMENT EXECUTIVE
The candidate must be able to build and maintain a strong sales advertisement clientele through identifying key business opportunities for advertising and special projects in both the print and digital platforms.
This candidate should have a good knowledge of the Archdiocese of Lagos particularly its Parishes and institutions as well as Catholic entrepreneurs or proprietors of businesses.
Skills and Competences:
- Flair for advert generation and strong industry contacts.
- Good negotiation skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective organizational abilities.
- Good in sourcing for advertisement from companies and corporate organizations.
- Ability to conceptualize and market special projects.
Qualification and Experience:
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Marketing, Mass Communication, or any other related field.
- Minimum of two years of cognate experience in newspaper marketing.
- Proven history of meeting and exceeding targets.
