Suspected armed robbers and kidnappers have escaped from the custody of the Cross River Police Command headquarters at Diamond Hill, Calabar.
The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident on Monday.
Ugbo, however, insisted that only three escaped and not 19 suspects that were widely speculated.
Only three escaped. Two of them were gunned down while one was rearrested.
The girlfriend of one of the suspects procured the saw which was used to cut the lock before they escaped.
Following the incident which happened on Sunday night, a source said:
The station guard and some other officers are being detained.
Recall that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in October, confirmed a jailbreak in Benin and Oko prisons in Benin City by hoodlums.
It was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering over 100, broke open one of the cells and freed several inmates in the process.
Several persons were said to have sustained gunshot injuries as an armed squad of prison officials engaged the suspected hoodlums in a gun duel.
The NCoS, while condemning the protesters for their non-peaceful, and violent destructive actions.
A journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, said the jailbreak in Benin was stage-managed by unknown persons.
This was stage managed, who did this I cannot tell you, because these people are smart. It’s not possible without the collusion of the insiders without proper ammunition.
