The joy of a section of worshippers in the Lagos metropolis has been restored as the state government announced that churches and mosques in Lagos are to resume worship services from June 19, 2020.

The governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noted that only 40 per cent of the maximum capacity in religious places would be allowed to engage in any worship service.

He also stated that worshippers between ages 0-15 and 65 and above would not be permitted into any worship centre until further notice.

The directive for a reduced number of people at worship centres follows the government’s resolve to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state, even as residents continually called on the government to reopen worship centres.

Lagos State is currently the epicentre of the disease in Nigeria and the Governor Sanwo-Olu government says the delay in the reopening of churches and mosques was to enable the government to further study the situation in the state before giving the nod.

Recall that the Federal Government recently permitted the reopening of religious centres across the country. It, however, said that the decision to finally allow congregational gathering rests on the shoulder of respective state governments.
